Credit Unions are federally insured, not-for-profit, member-owned financial institutions. We provide various financial services, including savings and checking accounts, auto loans, certificates, and more. However, it's important to note that we differ from banks in significant ways.

The first distinction is our member ownership. When you open an account, you become a partial owner of the credit union, not just another customer. This emphasizes our commitment to a cooperative and member-driven approach.

The second facet is our not-for-profit status. In contrast to banks, our emphasis is on contributing to the community. We dedicate time and resources locally, concentrating on financial education and providing lower loan rates for our members.

As a credit union, we operate with a community-driven approach, standing apart from impersonal and distant corporate entities. Our team lives and works within the local community, strengthening our bond with the people we serve.

Bellwood Credit Union operates as a division of Henrico Federal Credit Union, functioning as an additional branch. You have unrestricted access to your account at either location. We share the same CEO, leadership team, lending team, and contact center.

Henrico FCU offers three scholarships to members who are seniors in high school and continuing their education. Find out more about these scholarships.

All accounts at Henrico FCU and Bellwood Credit Union are insured by the NCUA up to the standard maximum share insurance amount of $250,000 for each deposit insurance ownership category. Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) continue to be insured separately.

Administered by the NCUA, the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF) is backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. Government.  For more information about the NCUA or the NCUSIF, visit

An electronic share insurance calculator is available online to help members determine how to structure accounts to include joint accounts, payable upon death accounts, and others to receive greater coverage than the $250,000.

The services offered are similar, but the philosophies are different. Credit unions are member-owned financial institutions and give back to the members through lower rates and lower fees. The owners of a credit union are their members. Stockholders are the owners of banks.

The routing number is the nine-digit number printed in the bottom left corner of each check and identifies the financial institution the account is assigned.

A disputed charge is not the same as fraud. Disputes are problems between you and a merchant over billing concerns. This is legitimate business with a reported problem, such as over-billing, double-billing, or not receiving products after paying.

Fraud is when an unknown third party uses your card through active measures like stealing your card number or account data. Fraud is not when you are charged too much by a vendor or when you dispute a transaction. Please contact our call center at 802.266.0290 if you have any questions about the difference.

Dial 866.985.2273 and follow the prompts.
